ECCF awards scholarships to Class of 2023

The Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF), an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Northern Alleghenies, acknowledged the accomplishments of the Class of 2023 by awarding 178 scholarships totaling over $297,000 to students in Elk and surrounding counties. Thanks to the generous donations from individuals, families, and organizations, 119 scholarship funds are currently administered at ECCF to benefit local students.

The recipients of these scholarships are graduating seniors from the surrounding areas. Out of the 172 scholarships; 35 scholarships went to seniors from Elk County Catholic HS, 52 to seniors from St. Marys Area High School, 43 to seniors from Johnsonburg Area High School, and 30 to seniors from Ridgway Area High School. Also, 14 additional scholarships were awarded to students who are already in attendance at a post-secondary institution, and 4 were awarded to rising freshman attending ECCHS in the fall. There were 17 awards given to students from surrounding schools. Seven new scholarship funds were established and awarded in 2023.

By providing scholarship assistance, we can enable greater success in college, providing backing for deserving students who want to graduate with their degree and give back to society. Donors who have established these scholarships are contributing to our future leaders. Kirst receives Campbell Nursing Scholarship

The Michelle A. Campbell memorial Nursing Scholarship fund was established at the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) in memory Michelle Campbell, a dedicated nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford who was ranked number one student in her nursing class.  She was known for her helpfulness and openness to learning. This scholarship is awarded to a second year or higher post-secondary nursing student who has graduated from an Elk County high school and shows a passion for nursing.

The 2023 recipient for the Michelle A. Campbell memorial Nursing Scholarship is Kristen Kirst. Kirsten is a 2018 graduate of Elk County Catholic High School who is currently attending UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at Hamot and pursuing a Registered Nursing Degree. Pictured is Kristen (center) alongside Michelle’s mother, Joyce Campbell ( R), and Michelle’s sister, Candy Frey (L ). Michelle’s family established this scholarship in 2002, one of the first scholarships the Foundation established. The family enjoys meeting the recipient of the award and learning about their passion for nursing.

Eccf awards Martini scholarships

ECCF awards Martini Scholarship to local students

The Robert P. Martini Scholarship, held at the Elk County Community Foundation, was recently awarded to five local students. This scholarship, established in Robert’s memory, is given to graduating seniors in both Brockway where he worked, and DuBois where he lived. Students awarded this scholarship include Emily Michalski and Taylor Rhed from Brockway Area High School, as well as Gabrielle Orzechowski, Madelyn Crabtree, and Morgan Bojalad from DuBois Area High School. Congratulations to this year’s five scholarship recipients who each received a $1,375 scholarship.

This scholarship is held by the Elk County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Northern Alleghenies. The Community Foundation provides the administrative and investment management services that make it easy for donors to accomplish their charitable wishes. St. Marys American Legion awards scholarships

The Elk County Community Foundation recently announced the 2023 winners of the American Legion scholarships. The local American Legion presented three scholarships to St. Marys students. The St. Marys American Legion Post #103, St. Marys Sons of the American Legion, and St. Marys American Legion Auxiliary all established individual scholarships with slightly different criteria, but all focused on the awareness and importance of our military veterans. A total of $1,500 was awarded to 3 local youth.

Recently, Legion officials presented the awards to the student scholarship winners. Elias Nedimyer from SMAHS recieved a $500 award from the St. Marys American Legion Post #103. The St. Marys Sons of the American Legion Post #103 Scholarship for $500 was awarded to Olivia Eckels from SMAHS. Lastly, Andrea Gradl from ECCHS was the recipient of the St. Marys Legion Auxiliary Scholarship for $500.

Local students awarded with Straub Brewery Scholarships

The Elk County Community Foundation recently recognized the 2023 scholarship winners from the Straub Brewery Scholarship Fund. Straub Brewery has been a consistent donor to the foundation and has supported local students with such scholarships for eighteen years. These scholarships recognize high school seniors who have displayed outstanding qualities in academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

Winners of this scholarship include Madisyn Hetrick and Rachel Sloff from ECCHS, as well as Caitlin Blessel and Isabella Catalone from SMAHS. Madisyn and Rachel both plan to attend Duquense University with Madisyn studying Nursing and Rachel studying Forensic Science and Law. Caitlin plans to attend Penn State Altoona to study Biochemistry, and Isabella plans to attend the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study Nursing. Each student was awarded $1,000.

This year, over $297,000 will be distributed to deserving students thanks to the all the donors who have established scholarships funds at ECCF.
